Quick answer: Use Form 6 to register as a new voter, Form 6B to link Aadhaar (voluntary), Form 7 to object to an entry or request deletion, and Form 8 to correct details, change address within or across constituencies, or request a replacement EPIC. All are filed free on the Election Commission of India’s Voters’ Service Portal or Voter Helpline app.
Most voter ID problems come down to choosing the wrong form. This guide explains what each form is for, what you need to attach, and what to do after you submit. It is based on the process published by the Election Commission of India (ECI); portal screens may change, so always follow the on-screen instructions.
The four forms at a glance
| Form | Use it for | Typical documents |
|---|---|---|
| Form 6 | New registration as an elector, including first-time voters | Passport-size photo, age proof, address proof |
| Form 6B | Voluntarily linking your Aadhaar number to your electoral roll entry | Aadhaar number (or an alternative listed document) |
| Form 7 | Objecting to a name being included, or requesting deletion (for example, a deceased person or a duplicate entry) | Details of the entry and the reason |
| Form 8 | Correcting name, photo, age or relation name; shifting residence; replacing a lost or damaged EPIC; marking disability | Proof supporting the change |
Form 6: registering as a new voter
You must be an Indian citizen, ordinarily resident at the address you give, and at least 18 years old on a qualifying date. The ECI uses four qualifying dates in a year (1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October), so you can apply as soon as you meet the age on one of them. Submit the form online, note your reference number, and track the application. After approval you can download your e-EPIC; see how to download it.
Form 6B: Aadhaar linking
Linking Aadhaar with the electoral roll is voluntary. It helps the ECI identify duplicate entries. If you do not wish to provide an Aadhaar number, the form lets you indicate that and offers alternative documents.
Form 7: objections and deletions
Form 7 is not for fixing your own mistakes. It is used to object to someone else’s entry or to request deletion of an entry such as a deceased person, a person who has permanently moved, or a duplicate record. Submitting false information is an offence, so use it only with genuine facts.
Form 8: corrections, address change and replacement
This is the form most people need. A single Form 8 covers several kinds of change:
- Correction of particulars: spelling of name, relation name, age or date of birth, gender, photo.
- Shifting of residence: within the same constituency or to a different one.
- Replacement of EPIC: if your card is lost, destroyed or badly damaged.
- Marking as a person with disability.
Choose only the section that applies to you and attach a clear scan or photo of the proof document.
Tips to avoid rejection
- Spell your name exactly as in the supporting document.
- Use a recent, clear photo that matches ECI photo specifications shown on the form page.
- Keep the reference number and check the application status on the portal.
- Do not pay an agent for the official processing. The government application is free.
After your correction is approved
Download the updated e-EPIC. If you want a sturdy wallet copy, you can order our Voter ID (EPIC) PVC card print from the new file. We never change details during printing; the print shows exactly what the roll shows. More about this in our guide to PVC voter cards.
